Brass Starts Fourth of July with Performance on Today Show The United States Air Force Band's Ceremonial Brass performed in New York City July 4 on NBC's "Today" show. "It was such an honor to be able to represent the men and women of the Air Force and U.S. military on NBC Today on the 4th of July," said Chief Master Sgt. Ed Teleky, drum majorfor the U.S. Air Force Band . "It was truly an exciting experience. The United States Air Force Band's Ceremonial Brass members did an absolutely spectacular job representing the Department of Defense in the most positive and professional manner." A Place in Time - Remembering Martha Jean Awkerman Martha Jean "Martye" Awkerman left an indelible mark as a pioneer for women brass players and as a legendary musical icon. In introducing herself to me, she made me aware of the existence of the Women's Air Force (WAF) Band, an ensemble with which I was unfamiliar. Martye, an accomplished trumpet player and former Cornet Soloist and dance band leader with the WAF Band, was stationed at Lackland AFB from 1954-1961. At that time, The USAF Band in Washington, DC was not open to female musicians. She dreamed her entire life to have the opportunity to play in the "DC" band. Read more... |

On May 23-24, 2009, military clarinetists from the Washington, DC area gathered in Historic Hangar 2 on Bolling Air Force Base for the first annual USAF Band Clarinet Symposium. The special event featured masterclasses from some of the leading clarinetists in the United States, including Eugene Mondie, Donald Montanaro, and David Gould. The weekend was also an opportunity for DC area band musicians to collaborate in a joint-service environment.
