This year we celebrate 100 years of military aviation. On March 2, 1910, Army 1st Lt. Benjamin Foulois launched a Wright Brothers "Aeroplane" into the air from Fort Sam Houston, Tex. Since that day, countless military men and women have touched the sky. We hope our music celebrating the spirit of "Off We Go!" touches you, as well.

2010 Holiday Concerts: The Best Gift of All

The theme of The United States Air Force Band's holiday concert is "The Best Gift of All." It will feature three groups from the Band--the Concert Band, Singing Sergeants and Ceremonial Brass--as well as several guest performers including ballet dancers, Santa and Mrs. Claus and the Grinch! The program will highlight a variety of selections that are sure to get you in the holiday spirit! This year's performances will take place on Saturday, December 4 at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, December 5 at 3 p.m. As in the past, the home for our holiday concerts will be the Daughters of the American Revolution Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C.

Clinician's Corner

Tech. Sgt. Jay Heltzer

38 Days

By Tech. Sgt. Jay Heltzer
Bass Trombone, Concert Band

This past summer, due to a medical procedure, I went 38 days without playing my instrument. In a matter of about one week of my return to playing, I was back to my regular performance strength. It is very difficult to return to musical success if you don't have musical success in place. Whether it's for medical reasons, family vacation, or a busy school schedule that unfortunately prevents you from making music, keep your playing and practicing up to the highest level. Your successful return will depend on your status when you stop.

Airmen of Note Gets New Digs!

New Airmen of Note Studio

At the end of October, The USAF Band's Airmen of Note got an early holiday gift--a brand new, state-of-the-art rehearsal space! The long-awaited facility will provide the "Note" with decades of music making, maximizing the group's status as the world's finest big band. In the old rehearsal studio, the 18-member ensemble would have enough room for themselves, their music, some instrument cases, and maybe a few filing cabinets. The new space, which is located inside the old Community Center at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, could fit three times as many musicians.

Airmen of Note plays Veterans Day concert in Massachusetts

The Airmen of Note, the Air Force's premiere jazz band, played a Veterans Day tribute concert Nov. 11 in West Springfield, Mass. The group was on a 15-day tour through Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New York and Pennsylvania.

About 300 people attended the concert at the Chris Grammaticas Auditorium in the West Springfield High School.

Created in 1950 to carry on the tradition of Maj. Glenn Miller's Army Air Corps dance band, today the "Note" features 18 of the most talented jazz musicians in the country and is one of the last touring big bands in the world.
