Summer in the City ... "it's not the heat, but the humidity" is what you often hear being said, and that may be true for the summer weather in our nation's Capital city, but throughout the summer, it's the military bands stationed in and around Washington, DC that offer up the hot music. Just about every day from Memorial Day to Labor Day you could take in a performance by one of the groups of the premier service bands making their home here. Whether on the steps of Capitol building, the Sylvan Theater by the Washington Monument, the Navy Memorial on Pennsylvania Avenue, or under the soaring spires of the Air Force Memorial, some of the best sounds of summer in the city are served up by military musicians. | Jazz Heritage Series Celebrates 20 Years The United States Air Force Band is pleased to announce the 2009 Jazz Heritage Series! The free concerts feature three giants in the jazz world: New York Voices, Joey Defrancesco, and Gary Smulyan. The performances will take place at George Washington University's Lisner Auditorium in Washington, DC at 8:00 p.m. on September 11, October 2, and November 6. Guest artists on the Jazz Heritage Series perform with the Airmen of Note, the premier jazz ensemble of the U.S. Air Force. Now in its 20th year, the Jazz Heritage Series provides a wonderful opportunity for listeners to experience first hand the professionalism of the United States Air Force through concerts featuring masters of the only American-born art form--jazz music. String Bassist The Singing Sergeants Combo Musicians in The United States Air Force Band are routinely called on to play in a wide variety of musical styles and genres. Symphonies, opera arias, military marches, jazz standards, music theatre and pop and country songs are all regularly performed by the women and men of The USAF Band. To successfully accomplish performing such a wide variety of styles and genres, two primary areas of musicianship are crucial: first and foremost is a thorough mastery of the fundamentals of music - rhythm and pitch; secondly, a comprehensive knowledge of the stylistic elements of any given genre. The United States Air Force Band is now accepting applications and audio recordings for the 2010 Colonel George S. Howard Young Artist Competition. This year's competition is for brass and percussion instrumentalists in grades 9-12. Applicants from all over the country submit audiotapes of themselves playing a specified selection for their instrument. Finalists are then invited to a live audition in Washington, DC to perform for the competition committee in January 2010. The winner will be flown to Washington, DC with one chaperone to perform with The USAF Band in February or March 2010.

Airmen of Note Shares Spotlight
in Joint Service Concert
Big band music lovers were treated to an amazing evening of music on August 16th at the Carter Barron Amphitheatre. That night marked the third annual Joint Service Jazz Festival in Washington, DC. This rare event featured three premier military big bands on the same stage in one evening - The Navy Commodores, The Army Blues, and The Airmen of Note. Each band was on their "A game" as they performed to a very enthusiastic audience. These world-class ensembles represented their respective armed services to perfection that evening.
